This weekend Dr. Chris Fiorentini will be traveling to Ewing to volunteer at the statewide Special Olympics, held at The College of New Jersey. The Special Olympics of New Jersey has established a program known as Healthy Athletes, which provides a variety of health services to the athletes over the course of the games. These services include everything from ear and eye exams to nutrition counseling and fitness promotion. Dr. Chris will be helping to run, as well as participating, in the dental service program known as Special Smiles. In this program, volunteers will be providing the athletes with oral hygiene instructions, fabrication of mouthguards, and dental screenings to detect caries, periodontal disease, and other oral health issues. All volunteers at the Special Smiles event are either dental students or licensed dentists.
The opening ceremony of the New Jersey Special Olympics is Friday June 8th, from 5:45pm-9:00pm. The Special Smiles program, as well as all other Healthy Athlete services, will be held on Saturday June 9th from 8:30am – 5:00pm, and on Sunday the 10th from 7:30am – 1:00pm.
Please note that everyone is encouraged to visit the games to cheer on the athletes! There are all types of events, including track and field, weightlifting, swimming, tennis, softball, and gymnastics.
