What To Do If You Are Experiencing A Dental Emergency

If you are currently experiencing a dental emergency, please call us immediately at (732) 545-1023 and visit our office in Monroe Township or Highland Park.

  • IF YOU HAVE A TOOTHACHE:

Clean your mouth thoroughly. Brush the affected area and floss to see if any debris has been caught in the area. Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater and apply a cold compress to the area to prevent swelling. You may take over-the-counter pain medication to reduce irritation.

  • IF YOU HAVE LOST A PERMANENT TOOTH:

If this is for a child with mixed dentition, first make sure that it is a permanent tooth and not a baby tooth. If you can find the tooth, pick it up by the crown (the white part) and avoid touching the root. If the tooth is dirty, wash it briefly under cold water. Next, try to replant the tooth back into the socket as best as you can. Bite on some gauze or a handkerchief to hold it in position while you get to us to stabilize the tooth.

If it is not possible to replant the tooth, either place the tooth in a glass of milk, in Hank’s balanced storage solution or hold it under the patient’s tongue while you get to us. The purpose of this is to protect the vital properties of the tooth.

  • IF YOUR GUMS ARE SWOLLEN:

Clean your mouth thoroughly. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water and apply a cold compress to the area to prevent swelling. You may take over-the-counter pain medication to reduce irritation.

Why Do You Need Treatment For A Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency can get worse in a short period without proper treatment. Something that would be considered minor can quickly escalate into a more serious issue. In some cases, infections may occur and treatment will be needed alongside the actual emergency that you’re dealing with at the moment. This is why we recommend calling to get scheduled for treatment as soon as possible.

What Can Be Expected While Undergoing Dental Emergency Treatment?

The first thing we’ll do is to ask you about the problem you’re currently experiencing. This allows us to see if an x-ray is necessary and if it is, we will work to take one quickly and easily. We examine the x-ray and your teeth to determine the root cause of the actual problem. You will then have treatment administered while you’re in the office, as this helps to prevent the problem from getting worse. We will prescribe antibiotics if there is an active infection present at the time of your appointment.
